Here are some great books read by me and former students. Check them out if you are looking for a good book!
It's the summer and everyone should be READING!
The question sometimes is: What book should I read????????
Merits of Mischief: The Bad Apple by T.R. Burns Ok, this book was not what I thought it was about. It starts off with a boy, Seamus, who is a typical student, who loves fish sticks like no other, who makes a tragic mistake. He kills his substitute teacher by innocently throwing an apple. It was a mistake but he is sent away to a school, Kilter Academy for Troubled Youth. At first, it seems like a really scary school and you wonder if Seamus is going to stay alive. Then the school starts to unveil its true intentions. See, the school wants to create troublemakers. They love when people make bad choices. Actually, you earn demerits for making bad choices and lose them for making good choices. Through all this craziness Seamus actually starts to make some good friends with some of the other students at the academy. Honestly, I didn’t LOVE this book, but I read the whole things because I was so curious as to how it would end. It gets CRAZY at the end. It is a series, but I don’t think that I will read the next books…but who knows!
Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics by Chris Grabenstein This is the book that I have wanted to read all year and knew for certain I would read it this summer. Not only did I hear snippets of it when Mrs. Levesque read it to my 5th graders, but come on, it is so relevant due to our 5th grade Reading Olympics. Now, I read Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library before this book, but I do not feel that you have to. It has the same characters but they reference the other book so a new reader would not be confused. The winners of the library challenge from the previous book are faced with a new challenge, well challenges. They are teamed up again against many other teams from across America. There are 12 challenges and are all modeled after the Olympics. There are of course, people who want these fun games stopped and will stop at nothing to end the fun Lemoncello games and library. As always, the ending is a surprise that you could never have guessed. I highly recommend this book!
Thanks Eve for this recommendation! You have my interest piqued!
Title: Numbers By: Rachel Ward
This story is about a girl named Jem who was born with a gift. I wouldn’t want this gift because you would have to see things that you wouldn’t want to see. In this book Jem found out something, so she run away from it,but it still happens. In the middle of all of this she falls in love, but something happens to him. You have to read this book to find out what Jem gift is and what she is running away from. This is the first book out of a three book series.
Thanks Angelina for this recommendation! I love reading historical fiction books too! Flygirl by: Sherri L. Smith
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good book to read over the summer because FlyGirl is one of those books that talks about women's rights, and about the rights for black women. In this book though, there’s much more than women’s rights and the rights for black women, there’s romance, friendships, and laughter. This book is filled to the top with good, sad , curious, funny, and much, much more emotions. Not only that, but you will get to ride along with Ida Mae Jones ( the main character of the book FlyGirl ) and relate to her experiences in the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) or in everyday life. However, you will notice that Ida Mae’s adventures aren’t so sunshine and rainbows. Along the way of Ida Mae’s journey you will come to notice that, everyday things we do for fun now weren't even available to Ida Mae, for two reasons. Number one, she was a black Girl, and number two, her and her family didn’t make a lot of money. Considering her mama and grandpa owned a small berry farm (and always worked on the farm not making a lot of a salary) they didn’t have a lot of extra spending money to buy toys, and stuffed animals. And to make matters a tiny bit worse Ida Mae, she would clean houses. And she wouldn’t save the money for anything except a ticket to Chicago. All without the help of Grandy ( Ida Mae’s grandfather ). So she was making her own salary for a ticket to Chicago, instead of something like food. However, if you are wondering why Ida Mae needs enough money to buy a ticket to Chicago, or why Ida Mae is keeping her plan to go to Chicago a secret from Mama. You’re going to have to check the book FlyGirl out of your local library.
6/26/17 Recommendation #2 Letters From Camp by Kate Klise First, I have to say I love the way Kate Klise writes. The story is told all through letters from the different characters. All of her books that I have read are told in the same manner. It is such a FUN read!
This story takes place at a camp where parents send their kids because they are always fighting. Sound familiar anyone? So, the siblings are sent to this camp that is run by a group of “siblings” that were a famous singing group when most kids’ parents were younger.
The pairs of siblings are separated by gender, boys on one side and girls on the other. The camp is horrible! The kids have to do chores all the time like: clean stables, paint houses, vacuum rooms, and remove algae from a pond. In addition to this, the sleeping quarters are not that great! The kids are required to write to their families once a week. What the kids don’t know is that the letters they write are never sent and the camp people send fake happy letters to their parents. As the book progresses, the conditions become worse. I won’t even begin to talk about the food they are served! In about the middle of the book- about the third week of camp for the kids- a mystery develops. Who is trying to kill Lyle, the only nice camp counselor there! The kids come together and work together to solve the mystery and shed light on the horrible conditions of the camp.
The story is such a fun read reading the different letters from all the different characters. After you read this book by Kate Klise, and you like the style of writing, I highly suggest any of her other books like: Trial by Journal, 43 Old Cemetery Road: Dying to Meet You, or Regarding the Bees. Happy Reading!
Here is my 2nd student recommendation by Josh Landon. Josh is sharing a non-fiction book. As we all know, to be a strong reader, you need to read a variety of genres. If you haven’t read a non-fiction book in a while, give it a whirl this summer!
Thanks, Josh, for the recommendation!
This is a book for you if you like baseball, biographies, and the most important is Big PAPI. It is filled with facts about his childhood and as one of the best hitters of all time. It tells you from him playing at his home town in Dominican Republic, to the Twins in the USA. Later he got released from the Twins. Then a friend got him into the Boston Red Sox and that is where he was until the end of his career.
6/21/17 Here is the first book I will recommend this summer:
Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile by Marcia Wells To begin, I must say this is an action packed, adventure mystery that has you wanting to read the next chapter. I read the book in one afternoon; it was that good.
Eddie, well, honestly, that isn’t even his name; his name is Edmund. He is a sixth grader that is kinda small for his age. He goes to an expensive private school in NYC and his place there is in jeopardy. To find out why, you have to read the book.
So, Edmund has a unique ability…he has a photographic memory. He can recall small details from any situation. The police find this out after his dad tries to stop a robbery and Edmund is able to recall and actually draw the criminal. Once the police find this out the want Edmund to help solve an old case that has some expensive art in peril. Edmund gets into some pretty dangerous predicaments helping to solve this case.
When you finish this book you will be pleased to realize that it is actually part of a series. hen you finish this book you will be pleased to realize that it is actually part of a series.
